OUR LAB IS LOCATED IN STUIT HALL ON THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA CAMPUS!

Teen Transition Study Participant Information

Location: The lab is located in Stuit Hall, which is on the corner of Jefferson and Gilbert Streets (335 E. Jefferson Street).

Parking:  For visits on weekdays before 4:30 p.m., there is street parking and metered parking nearby and the closest parking ramp is the Tower Ramp on Iowa Avenue (approximately 1 block South of Stuit Hall).  There is also a lot in front of Stuit Hall, accessible on Gilbert Street between Jefferson Street and Iowa Avenue.  Participants may park here after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends.  Note - if you park in the lot, be sure to avoid the back row that says Reserved 24/7.

Food and Drink: Please feel free to bring any food/drink.  We also have snacks and juice boxes/water available for you both as well.

Where to Go: When you arrive at Stuit Hall, please proceed up one level to the waiting area on the 1st floor and a member of the research team will meet you and bring you to the lab. For visits on weekends, Stuit Hall is locked.  Please wait at the front doors and a member of the research team will greet you and let you in

What Will Happen During the Visit: At the visit, the research team will review procedures with you and your child and obtain informed consent.  You will also indicate whether you wish to receive any feedback about your child based on the testing and interview responses. Your child will then proceed to a separate room and complete the testing protocol while you complete the interview.  The procedures will last between 2 and 3 hours.

During the testing protocol, we will ask your child to complete a task while having their heart rate recorded with two electrodes (one placed on the collarbone, the other on the rib cage).  These electrodes are latex free and made for sensitive skin – your child will also be able to attach the electrodes themselves.  During the task, your child will be watching short clips from the film, My Girl, which are intended to evoke both positive and negative emotions.  If you are unfamiliar with this film, there scenes that focus on the death and funeral of one of the characters that your child will see.  If you have concerns about your child viewing these clips, just let our research team know and we can skip these clips.

We will be asking your child to answer some questions about their physical development during the lab visit.  Both you and your child will complete these questions separately on a computer in the lab.  The tester will step out of the room while your child is answering these questions to ensure complete privacy for their answers.

Lastly, after the visit, we will be asking both you and your child to complete survey at home for 2 weeks (3 times per day).  These surveys are very short and meant to capture day-to-day changes in mood and behavior.  These can be sent to each of you via email or SMS text message (with a link to the electronic survey).  We will be sending a morning, afternoon, and evening survey to each of you at the times you specify at the visit that work best for you. Following the 2-week home surveys, you and your child will each receive an additional $20, again payable via check or gift card (send via email to you).

Payment: You will each receive $40 for the visit, payable check or Amazon gift card.  Checks are issued from Accounts Payable at the University of Iowa and take approximately 5-7 business days to process after the visit.  The checks will be mailed to you and your child.  You do not need to bring any bank account information (the university changed their policy regarding electronic payments for research visits and switched back to issuing checks).
